I’d shortlist three firms plus a second tier, but the public evidence is thinner than you’d hope. Firms rarely publicize individual payroll leadership placements, so most of what’s visible is live job postings and one or two press releases. Treat this as a screening list and verify with references.

Shortlist

1. Hanold Associates (now part of CAA Executive Search) : This is the strongest documented placement I found. Kaiser Permanente appointed an Executive Director, National Payroll Services from a Hanold search in April 2022. Hanold is a retained boutique focused on HR and Diversity & Inclusion officers and board directors, and CAA acquired it in October 2024, folding its team of 20 into CAA’s search division. Most of its public work is CHRO and head-of-HR searches, so payroll is an adjacent specialty rather than its core. Ask who from the Kaiser team is still there and would run your search. [Hanold Associates Executive Search & Leadership Advisory +2](https://hanold-associates.com/tag/adrienne-labuy)

2. Frazer Jones (with Maximum Management) : It is an HR-only firm with a dedicated payroll practice and an Executive Director, Head of Payroll. It offers executive and retained search as well as permanent, interim and temporary recruitment. In the US, its North American hubs are New York and Orlando. It also claims 100% of its top 100 clients have worked with it for at least three of the last five years, which is self-reported. Its visible payroll work skews to the UK and to specialist or manager roles, so I couldn’t confirm US payroll director placements. It is worth a call if you want a payroll-focused team. [www.frazerjones.com +3](https://frazerjones.com/?p=3476)

3. Banyan Search : It has a live search for a Director of Payroll Operations at a growing, publicly traded company in Raleigh. The role owns North America payroll and SOX controls. That is close to your scope if you have multi-entity, controls-heavy needs. It is evidence of current activity, not of a track record, so ask for completed searches. Second tier (active director-level payroll searches, no track record shown)

• Insight Global : a direct-placement Senior Director of Payroll search in Louisville, KY. [institutedata](https://jobs.institutedata.com/jobs/director-of-payroll-jobs/)

• Inceed : a Director of Payroll search in McLean, VA, for a multi-entity, multi-state and international workforce. [inceed](https://jobs.inceed.com/job/33086-director-of-payroll-mclean-virginia/?amp=1)

• Career Group Search : a multi-state Director of Payroll role in infrastructure/technology that requires union payroll experience. [careergroupcompanies](https://careergroupcompanies.com/job-posting/183596)

• All Med Search : a healthcare Director of Payroll search in Brentwood, TN, with Oracle Fusion Payroll experience required. [sonara](https://sonara.ai/job-details/director-at-all-med-search-289accfb-a8ee-5f63-8b9b-ebd6988f7ea2)

• Robert Half : it runs a Director of Payroll hiring page and promises a specialized recruiter will typically contact you within one business day. That page is on its Canadian site, so I can’t confirm the US process. [roberthalf](https://roberthalf.com/ca/en/job-details/director-of-payroll)

How I’d narrow it down

• Evidence gap: I found no independently verified placement data (retention rates, time-to-fill) for any of these firms. Ask each for three recent payroll director or VP searches at similar-sized employers, with client references.

• Fit to your environment: Match the firm to your scale, headcount, systems (Oracle, Workday, ADP, UKG), union or multi-state exposure, and SOX needs. Ask who at the firm would actually run the search.

• Search type: Retained search (Hanold, Frazer Jones) suits a confidential or high-stakes hire. Contingent firms (Banyan, Inceed, Insight Global) are faster and cheaper but less exclusive.

If you tell me your industry, headcount, payroll platform, and whether the search is confidential, I can narrow this to two or three firms and draft the questions to ask them.

I found the following public evidence. It is mostly job postings and firm marketing, so treat it as a first screen rather than proof of placement quality. I found no published placement outcomes, fees or client references for any of these firms.

Shortlist

1. Robert Half (permanent and executive search)

• Robert Half currently advertises Payroll Director roles. One was posted in August 2026 for a complex, multi-jurisdiction workforce in California. [hireheroesusa

• Others are Houston roles requiring multi-state and Canadian payroll, union payroll experience and acquisition/integration experience. [hireheroesusa

• Its site also says its salary figures come from actual compensation for professionals it has matched with employers. [roberthalf

• Several of its postings are contract or manager-level, and the listed pay data is for Payroll Manager rather than Director. It looks strongest on volume and market data, and less proven on confidential senior searches.

2. Korn Ferry Professional Search (formerly Lucas Group)

• Lucas Group’s archived listings include a 2019 Director-level Payroll Leader search for US operations at a multinational, with SOX controls and Workday. They also include a 2018 Global Director of Payroll, Shared Services and HRIS search. [kornferry

](https://interimjobs.kornferry.com/jobs/payroll-leader-1559717) [kornferry

• Korn Ferry agreed to acquire Lucas Group in October 2021, so this is a Korn Ferry capability now, though the evidence comes from the Lucas era. [privsource

• The same source notes a 2023 acquisition of Salo, an interim finance, accounting and HR talent provider. That could help if you want an interim payroll leader while you search. [privsource

• The postings are dated (2018–2020), and many are manager-level.

3. Career Group Search

• It is a women-owned executive search firm with a Director of Payroll search at $140k–$180k. The role covers multi-state payroll, union environments and system modernization, which is similar to what you describe. [careergroupcompanies

• It is a single posting, so I have no evidence of how often it does this work.

4. Cherry Bekaert / Cordia Resources

• Cordia describes a boutique retained search practice focused on accounting and finance, HR and IT, covering Director and VP roles. [cbh

• It is credible for finance-adjacent director searches, but I found no payroll-specific evidence.

5. Frazer Jones (payroll specialist)

• It runs a dedicated payroll practice that offers executive search, contingent and interim hiring, with consultants focused solely on payroll. It also claims a network of 300,000+ HR professionals. [frazerjones

](https://www.frazerjones.com/payroll/) [frazerjones

• All of this is the firm’s own marketing, and the examples I found are UK/EMEA-oriented. Ask directly about US payroll director placements.

• Middlemore is similar. It describes itself as a specialist in global payroll, HR and HRIS search, but its listing is in the Global Payroll Association directory and looks UK-led. [gpa

Others to consider

• Healthcare payroll: All Med Search has a Director of Payroll search at $145k–$160k with Oracle Payroll experience. This is a niche option if you are in healthcare. [sonara

• Michael Page / Page Executive: It has a US presence and executive search arm, but the only payroll-related posting I found was a Head of HR Shared Services role in Malaysia. I would not shortlist it for this search without further evidence. [michaelpage

What I’d ask each firm

1. Name three US Payroll Director or VP Payroll placements in the last 24 months, with industry and headcount.

2. Which consultant would run the search, and how many payroll searches has that person done?

3. How do they source and assess candidates on the technical side: multi-state tax, wage-and-hour, your payroll platform, SOX controls?

4. What are the fee structure and replacement guarantee?

The best fit depends on your size, industry and payroll platform (Workday, ADP, Oracle and so on), and on whether you want retained or contingent search. If you share those, I can narrow the list.
