There isn’t a definitive “best” list for payroll director searches, and I couldn’t verify placement track records for any of these firms. These are the ones worth a first call, grouped by search style.

Specialist payroll and HR search

• Frazer Jones: A global HR executive search and recruitment consultancy covering executive and retained search, as well as permanent, interim and temporary hiring. Its payroll practice is led by a global head, and the firm has recruited executive payroll and benefits professionals with UK, EMEA and global remits. They have a New York presence, but much of their visible payroll work is UK-based, so ask about their US payroll director placements specifically. They’re strongest if your payroll is multi-country. • The Christopher Group: Specializes in recruiting HR executives and has been named by Forbes as one of the best executive recruiting firms in the U.S. Ask whether they run payroll leadership searches or mainly broader HR roles. [builtin](https://builtin.com/articles/hr-staffing-companies)

Finance and accounting recruiters with payroll depth

• Robert Half: It has a dedicated payroll director page and cites a projected salary range of roughly $104,000 to $185,500 for the role, which is a useful benchmark. It’s the largest finance staffing firm and good for volume and speed, though less boutique than a retained search firm. [roberthalf](https://roberthalf.com/us/en/job-details/payroll-director)

• Addison Group: Its finance and accounting practice covers payroll specialists through CFOs, with 28 US offices, and it ranked #4 on SIA’s list of largest US finance and accounting staffing firms. [addisongroup](https://addisongroup.com/?p=317)

• Aston Carter (Allegis Group): Focuses on HR, operations, accounting and finance positions. [builtin](https://builtin.com/articles/hr-staffing-companies)

• LaSalle Network: Named a top recruiting firm by Forbes, and can handle HR executive searches and own the whole recruitment process. [builtin](https://builtin.com/articles/hr-staffing-companies)

• Kforce and Hirewell also appeared in the HR/finance staffing roundups.

Questions to ask any firm

1. How many payroll director or VP-level searches have you completed in the last 24 months, and can you share anonymized examples?

2. Is this retained or contingent, and what is the fee structure and replacement guarantee?

3. Who will actually run the search, and what is their payroll network?

4. How do you assess multi-state compliance, payroll system implementation (ADP, Workday, UKG), and leadership skills?

5. What does your sourcing plan look like for passive candidates?

Other options

• For a director-level role, a retained search is usually the better fit than contingent, especially if the hire is confidential or strategic.

• Post the role with the American Payroll Association and its local chapters, and ask your payroll vendor reps for referrals.

• If you’re a large enterprise, global executive search firms like Korn Ferry or Heidrick & Struggles may be worth a look. That’s from my general knowledge rather than my search, and they’re likely overkill for most payroll director roles.

If you tell me your headcount, industry, payroll platform, and whether the role is confidential, I can narrow this to two or three firms and sketch a search brief.

Here’s a shortlist. I couldn’t find an independent ranking of US firms that specialize in payroll director searches, and most “best of” lists are written by recruiting firms themselves, so treat them as a starting point.

Firms with a visible payroll-leadership focus

• Robert Half has a dedicated Director of Payroll page and says a specialized recruiter will typically contact you within one business day. It’s a good option if you want speed and volume. [roberthalf

• Career Group Search is an executive search arm of Career Group Companies. It is currently running a Director of Payroll search for a multi-state, union-environment client, so it clearly handles this level of role. [careergroupcompanies

• Inceed is a direct-hire staffing firm that has posted a Director of Payroll search involving multi-entity, multi-state and international payroll. [inceed

• Frazer Jones has a payroll practice led by someone described as a leading executive payroll specialist in the UK. It’s UK/EMEA-centric, but it hosted a payroll event in New York City. It could be worth a conversation if your payroll has international scope. [frazerjones

Finance and accounting search firms that cover payroll leadership

• One 2026 roundup of finance and accounting recruiters names Vaco, Addison Group, Creative Financial Staffing, Century Group, The Intersect Group, Brewer Morris, Smith Hanley, FAC Partners, hireneXus and Dartmouth Partners. Vaco, Addison Group and FAC Partners are the most relevant for direct-hire leadership. [noon

• For a larger, more senior or confidential search, retained firms such as Korn Ferry and Russell Reynolds appear on finance executive search lists. They’re usually more than a Payroll Director search needs, and they cost more. [alphaapexgroup

• Mid-market retained boutiques like Talentfoot show up in US finance executive search rankings. They’re worth considering if you want partner-level attention. [talentfoot

How I’d choose

1. Pick two or three, not ten. One retained or contingent search specialist plus one broader staffing firm is usually enough.

2. Ask about recent payroll placements. You want Payroll Directors specifically, not general accounting hires. Ask for two or three recent examples and references.

3. Match their experience to your situation. Multi-state or international footprint, union payroll, headcount size, and your platform (ADP, Workday, Oracle and so on) all narrow the candidate pool.

4. Compare terms. Retained versus contingent, fee percentage, guarantee period, and any exclusivity.

Beyond agencies:

the American Payroll Association (including its job board and chapters) and the Global Payroll Association directory are worth using, since payroll leaders tend to be well networked within them. If you tell me your headcount, industry, number of states, payroll system and whether the role is remote, I can help narrow this further or draft a brief for the recruiters.
