Search results show only which firms advertise payroll roles, not who is best at senior searches. So the shortlist below combines those signals with my general knowledge of the market, and you should check track record directly with each firm.

Tier 1: Retained or executive search (best fit for a Director hire)

A role this senior, in a PE-backed buy-and-build with confidentiality and change-management stakes, usually suits a retained or hybrid search model.

• Michael Page / Page Executive : strong in finance and HR leadership and PE-backed portfolio hiring. Ask whether they have placed payroll or HR operations leaders at that level.

• Robert Walters : has a good record in senior finance and HR transformation hires.

• Harvey Nash / Nash Squared : usually stronger on technology leadership, but worth a call if the role covers payroll system consolidation (HCM, provider migration).

• A PE-focused boutique such as Odgers Berndtson, Russell Reynolds or Heidrick & Struggles for the HR/finance end. This is probably overkill unless the role will sit on the executive committee.

Tier 2: Specialist payroll, HR and finance recruiters with demonstrated activity

• Oakleaf Partnership : describes itself as the UK’s largest independent HR recruiter. It has advertised senior global payroll shared-services leadership roles. It also runs interim and project payroll work, which is useful if you need an interim bridge during integration. • Hays : has advertised a Payroll Director role with a global remit and automation and project responsibilities. It has broad reach but varies in depth at this level, so ask who would run the search. [aicpa-cima](https://mycareer.aicpa-cima.com/job/4462555/group-payroll-manager/)

• Morgan McKinley : lists payroll and HR roles and offers permanent, contract and executive search services. It is more London and financial services focused. [morganmckinley](https://www.morganmckinley.com/uk/jobs/surrey/payroll-lead/1103779)

• Robert Half : strong in finance and payroll across the UK and Europe, but more transactional than advisory.

How I would narrow it

1. Pick one or two Tier 1 firms, ideally one on a retained basis, plus one specialist (Oakleaf is the obvious candidate) for market mapping and interim cover.

2. Ask every firm for three recent placements at Group Payroll Director or Head of Payroll level, preferably in multi-entity or acquisitive groups, with references.

3. Test European capability. Your candidate pool needs multi-country payroll experience (managing providers such as ADP, Zucchetti or local bureaus, and works council or statutory differences), so ask how they would source that.

4. Check fee models, guarantee and replacement periods, and whether your PE sponsor already has preferred supplier agreements or an operating partner network. Many sponsors do, and it can save you time and cost.

5. Ask whether they would map candidates from payroll outsourcers (ADP, Zellis, Ceridian/Dayforce) and from other PE-backed groups, as these are often the best talent pools.

It may also help to check your recruitment channel against what the role really is. If the Group Payroll Director’s first 12 months are mainly provider rationalisation and control design, an interim or fixed-term search alongside the permanent one can protect your integration timeline. I can draft a brief or RFP to send to the shortlisted firms, covering the scope, seniority, location, European exposure and success criteria, if that would help.
